Facelift of the Future or Tighter Skin Without Surgery

Every 8 seconds a member of the "baby boomer" generation turns 50. Eighty million Americans fall into this category. For decades we have searched for a safe and effective way to tighten the skin and the underlying structures safely with little or no downtime. The principles of radiofrequency surgery are not new. Orthopedic surgeons, for example, have used radiofrequency for nearly a decade to tighten ligaments and joint capsules and spaces non-surgically.

  • The ThermaCool system is the only FDA approved noninvasive, non-ablative (this means no injury to the skin and hence no oozing, bleeding, etc.) radiofrequency system which combines radiofrequency heating with external cryogen cooling to achieve the following changes:
  • Immediate collagen contraction: This can lead to elevation of the eyebrow, tightening of the skin around the eyes and laugh lines, tightening and reduction of the jowls, tightening of the neck and chest, etc.
  • Long term collagen remodeling: some patients start to see some improvement within a few weeks but the majority of the patients need 4 to 6 months to achieve optimal results.
  • No patient recovery time after this procedure: The procedure is performed in the office with either topical anesthesia (EMLA, ELEMAX) or with light sedation. Most patients may return to their daily activities the next day. About 5 percent of the patients experience mild swelling and bruising which resolves within 7 to 10 days.

How does the ThermaCool system work?

Radio frequency is applied to pre-cool and anesthetized skin. This energy is transformed into a uniform, sustained deep tissue heat underneath the skin and its structures. Improvement appears slowly over weeks as collagen remodels and the skin and underlying structures tighten.

Who is a good candidate and what areas can be treated?

Almost every one can benefit from this procedure. Especially patients with darker skin complexion, those who are not good surgical candidates for a conventional facelift, and those who scar easily will immensely benefit from the Thermage system. Almost any area of the body can be safely treated. The procedure takes about one hour and there are practically no after care instructions.

The face and neck area seem to benefit the most. I have successfully treated arms, legs, breast, thigh, and abdominal areas. These sites benefit from multiple treatments.

How long will the effects of the Thermage procedure last?

The thermage procedure causes immediate tightening of the collage structure, with additional tightening over time. Unpublished reports by experienced cosmetic surgeons indicate that results may last 36 months or longer based on the patient's natural aging process.
