When we gain or lose weight, we are not adding or subtracting fat cells, but are changing the amount of fat within each cell. Fat cells lie beneath the skin throughout the body, but accumulate in greater amounts in certain areas. It is not surprising, therefore, that many people find in spite of weight loss; they are left with bulges or fat deposits in certain areas on the body. Liposuction is a surgical technique in which special probes, attached to a high suction pump, are passed through tiny punctures made in inconspicuous places around the body. Fat cells are then suctioned out, allowing the surgeon to shape and contour various parts of the body.

Expected times of recovery are usually measured in hours, since the procedure is commonly done as an outpatient surgery. Scarring is minimal because the incisions made are small and easily healed. Discomfort during the surgery is non-existent because the patient is lightly sedated and local anesthetic is applied. The greatest result of liposuction is that the results are permanent and will last forever.

Both men and women can accumulate fat in areas of the body which cannot be easily removed by exercise and diet. In the late 1970's, techniques were developed to safely and effectively remove undesired fat from nearly all body areas. Liposuction has also been used effectively to treat many non-cosmetic fat accumulations, such as lipomas (benign fatty tumors) and gynecosmastia (fatty male breast). Liposuction is not a weight loss solution, but rather a contouring procedure best utilized in conjunction with a program of exercise and optimal weight maintenance.

Micro Lipoinjection was developed in the 1980's. Wrinkles, folds and other depressions resulting from injury or surgery, or resulting from aging or sun damage, can be safely and effectively filled with one's own fat. Since one's own tissue is used, there is little risk of the body rejecting it. Common conditions such as smile and frown lines are easily improved.
