What is Collagen & Zyplast?

Collagen & Zyplast are injectable "filler" materials which were developed for temporary elimination of scars and wrinkles.

These materials which are marketed by Collagen Corporation are developed from bovine collagen which has been chemically modified to be made less likely to cause allergic reactions in humans.

Collagen is a material which is "thinner" and used for fine wrinkling around the eyes, mouth and very superficial wrinkles. Zyplast is a "thicker" material and is used for deeper wrinkles and creases. In some cases to get the best result your dermatologist may recommend piggy-backing collagen over zyplast for the best results.

When a patient requests lip augmentation, zyplast filler material is generally used.

How is the procedure done?

The material is injected with a small needle. These is a small amount of anesthetic mixed with the collagen and the area injected temporarily goes numb.

If fear of pain and discomfort exist a topical anesthetic prescription can be applied here ten minutes before the collagen injection. This affords a reduction in the amount of pain experienced.

How long does it last?

These filler material are not permanent and they can be expected to last from three (3) months to a maximum of approximately one (1) year. The length of time the material may last depends on age, depth of wrinkling, the location injected and the amount of material used.

What are the risks involved?

There is a rare risk of allergic reaction to these materials. A patient must be tested with a skin test six (6) weeks before use of the filler material in the face. The test is palced under the skin usually in the upper, inner arm.
