Silicone Injections: a Permanent Consideration.

Injection of Silicone for cosmetic enhancement of the face and the body has a long and emotionally charged history. Human error such as over injection and improper positioning of the Silicone can cause severe disfigurement and a lifetime of pain. Beyond this, the unchanging properties of Silicone are itself problematic when taken together with the changing components of the face and body. Irregularities and granuloma formation can cause permanent scar formation which may require subsequent surgery to be removed.

A month does not go by in my practice without a consultation by an unhappy patient regarding some of the issues mentioned above. Even with an optimal procedure, complications can still arise due to the opposing natures between Silicone and our bodies. Consider this: our face and bodies are constantly changing. Silicone does not. Because a permanent filler, such as Silicone, doesn’t change and age the same way as our normal tissues do, problems can occur at anytime, and the results can be catastrophic.

The type of Silicone used in your operation can also present its own set of complications. Industrious grade Silicone affects the body in adverse ways and generally ought to be avoided altogether. More recently a medical grade Silicone (Silikon 1000- Alcon Laboratories, Fort Worth, Texas) has been used for the cosmetic correction of the face. Some very respected dermatologists are using this pure Silicone for the correction of facial AIDS atrophy and defects after cancer surgery. In small amounts (micro-droplets) Silikon 1000 can result in a cosmetically appealing and long lasting result.

If you’re planning on having Silicone injection treatments, please understand that there will always be the risk of irregular scar formation and migration. My advice: think twice before using a permanent filler and proceed only if you have complete confidence in the doctor performing your treatment.

COMMENTS:

I agree. I have seen patients with persistent problems years after silicone injections. With the array of wounderfull alternative fillers available, I see no reason to take a risk on curaneous injections of silicone until it has undergone rigorous longterm studies and has been used for over a year after approval befor jumping on the bandwagon!
